Youth Ministry Suggests
Goal 1. That the Youth Ministry Team improve its effective role in the
school
Strategy 1: By monthly, calendared Youth Ministry Team meetings;
Strategy 2: By becoming more involved in the oversight role in the planning
and evaluation of school events.
Goal 2. That the Pastoral Plan be given more visibility
in the school community
Strategy 1: By posting the complete Pastoral Plan on the Bosco website,
in all classrooms, and by making the Pastoral Plan available in a binder
located at the front office;
Strategy 2: By including the Pastoral Plan in the faculty orientations
in August;
Strategy 3: By reviewing the Pastoral Plan in the first quarter in all
religion classes.
Goal 3. That the school re-connect students and their
families into their parish liturgy, programs and activities
Strategy 1: By using announcements, the school bulletin, newsletters
and religion classes to emphasize family attendance at Sunday Eucharist;
Strategy 2: By training our students as Eucharistic ministers and lectors
for both parish and school liturgies;
Strategy 3: By supporting and helping those in confirmation programs
to fulfil their confirmation requirements;
Strategy 4: By encouraging parish activities such as Youth Day, while
organizing those students with no parish participation into a participating
group from the school.
Goal 4. That the spiritual climate of the school to be
enhanced.
Strategy 1: By all members of the school community striving to eliminate
vulgar language;
Strategy 2: By keeping the school chapel open throughout the entire
school day to foster a welcoming environment and allow all members of
the school community to make a visit whenever they have an opportunity;
Strategy 3: By focusing on improving the quality of liturgy, including
the daily morning mass, school-wide masses (Triduum, Feast of SJB and
Marian Day) and on the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation
during Advent and Lent.
The Students suggest that
Goal 1: The students will improve communication with faculty, administrators,
parents, and other students
Strategy 1 By using the Youth Board with its representatives from ASB,
Campus Ministry, Christian Service and Varsity Club for collaborative
planning on such pressing issues as drugs, fighting, and the lack of
self-discipline.
Strategy 2 By appointing class reps for quarterly town-hall and follow-up
meetings;
Goal 2: The students will increase the percentage of
Junior and Senior participation in the college application process
Strategy 1 By taking advantage of the Guidance Department’s college
application help process;
Strategy 2 By beginning the process of college selection in the Junior
Year.
Strategy 3 By encouraging the students to apply to colleges through
“application parties” or other imaginative ways;
Goal 3: The Students will foster leadership and school
pride, with a renewed focus on student involvement on and off campus
Strategy 1 By organizing beginning of the year club sign-ups, with a
follow-up day early in the second semester for club sign-ups;
Strategy 2 By taking ownership of the lunch area, activities (intramurals),
and cleanup, restroom cleanliness, rally production and participation,
and parking lot problems;
Strategy 3 By adherence to the school dress and grooming codes;
Strategy 4 By incorporating selective student clubs (ASB, Key Club,
NHS, Speech & Debate) into Open House.

Ministry in collaborative planning

Parents and Alumni
Parents suggest
Goal 1: That attendance at PBA meetings/functions be increased
Strategy 1 By utilizing the marquee on Bellflower Blvd. to announce
monthly meetings;
Strategy 2 By informing parents about meetings (i.e., school newsletters,
flyers).
Goal 2: That parents collaborate with faculty, administration,
Salesians, and students to improve communications
Strategy 1 By encouraging use of the Student-Parent Guide.
Strategy 2 By clarifying school schedules: calendar, daily, block.
Strategy 3 By obtaining better information regarding college opportunities;
Strategy 4 By inviting all academic counselors and deans to a PBA meeting
for introduction and information.
Goal 3: That the PBA institute a recycling program on
campus.
Strategy 1 By forming a committee to plan the project;
Strategy 2 By making the generated funds available for student needs.

The Curriculum
Committee and Faculty Suggest
Goal 1. That the school community encourage and support a student-centered
learning culture
Strategy 1 By encouraging all faculty and coaches to infuse Catholic/Salesian
values into all teaching disciplines.
Strategy 2 By updating the curriculum to reflect current instructional
pedagogy focusing on student-centered, technology infused, real-world
learning experiences.
Strategy 3 By increasing and enhancing annual assessment, disaggregating
information to identify target areas of improvement (semester exams,
common performance projects by subject, chapter/unit tests, rubrics,
e-portfolios & student exit interviews)
Strategy 4 By providing a more effective system in disseminating yearly,
quarterly and monthly calendars for the school community (email, Internet,
marquee, newsletter, etc.)
Goal 2. That the school community (stakeholders) be committed
to the ongoing school improvement process
Strategy 1 By creating a strategic plan that will maximize student-learning
experiences.
Strategy 2 By working directly with the school’s leadership team
to strengthen existing organizational structures and clarifying leadership
roles (Updated flow chart).
Strategy 3 By participating in ongoing professional development that
includes the latest educational research and technology (graduate school,
workshops & seminars.
Goal 3. That the Curriculum Committee and Faculty respond
to teacher concerns regarding time, support, and equity.
Strategy 1 By encouraging faculty (lay and Salesian) involvement in
extra/co-curricular activities as a coach and/or moderator to promote
Salesian fellowship;
Strategy 2 By enhancing the current Teacher Mentor Program and developing
a consistent assessment tool in order to identify its success and target
areas of improvement;
Strategy 3 By designing faculty meetings, grade-level meetings, and
faculty forums to address the school’s student-centered learning
culture;
Strategy 4 By the Salary Committee meeting twice annually as an advocate
for teacher salary/benefits to encourage quality Salesian teacher retention;
Strategy 5 By supporting and participating in the school’s drug
prevention and testing program.

The Salesians Suggest
Goal 1. That the Salesians of the St. John Bosco High School community
promote Salesian Spirituality expressed in a community that experiences
God's presence in everyday work, fellowship and prayer
Strategy 1 By making a diligent effort to be in attendance at as many
school functions as possible: athletic competition, recitals, school
meetings, theatre presentations, after-school oratory, alumni association
and fund raising events;
Strategy 2 By presenting at the faculty retreats (August and Mid-year)
a Salesian component centered on experiencing God's presence in the
young in work, fellowship, and prayer;
Strategy 3 By presenting two Salesian in-services on the practical applications
of Salesian Spirituality and the Preventive System; giving special attention
to Salesian Presence, an overall respect for students and the use of
appropriate language;
Strategy 4 By mentoring new teachers in the Salesian system of education,
especially during their first semester;
Strategy 5 The Salesian community will seek ways to involve students,
faculty, and parents in different experiences of prayer.
Goal 2. That the Salesian Community promote vocation
awareness and provide vocational accompaniment.
Strategy 1 By structuring the Salesian community's timetable in such
a way to allow our prayers and Eucharist to be shared with the young
and our lay collaborators; and by preparing special monthly Eucharists
in collaboration with the Prayer and Worship group and Campus Ministry;
Strategy 2 By creating times of fellowship and planning with faculty/staff,
students and parents; (The CEPC, for example, provides an opportunity
for fellowship and planning.) and by sharing the scheduling and planning
of the after-school oratory (student lounge) with the PBA;
Strategy 3 By welcoming young people and collaborators into our community
for prayer, meals, outings and special celebrations. The Salesians will
sponsor monthly birthday celebrations for the faculty and staff.
Strategy 4 By inviting faculty and staff, students and their parents
to be present at Province events, province days of recollection, Salesian
Family study days, and anniversary celebrations; and by recruiting students
and collaborators for summer ministries in California and Mexico;
Strategy 5 By making the after-school oratory an integral activity for
meeting the needs of youth at St. John Bosco High School and for vocational
accompaniment; by determining the staffing and supporting the program
with personnel and supplies; and by seeking support from faculty and
selected senior students.
Goal 3. That the CEPC develop comprehensive goals for
the Pastoral Plan for the 2004-2005 School Year. Certain goals lend
themselves to be shared by all groups within the CEPC; for example,
“promoting Salesian spirituality…that experiences God’s
presence in everyday work, fellowship and prayer.”

The Alumni suggest
Goal 1: That the Alumni Association will establish an Alumni Assistance
Fund and designate an amount or percentage based on proceeds from fundraising
activities to assist current students based on criteria written by the
alumni committee and agreed upon by the Executive Committee.
Strategy 1 By providing criteria for distribution of designated funds
and the amount to be given and distributed in the designated school
year;
Strategy 2 By raising funds through ongoing fund raising events (alumni
apparel, Annual Picnic, Tailgate Party, donations, and Fish Fry Nights);
Strategy 3 By working together with the Parent Booster Association to
raise funds for the Alumni Assistance Fund;
Strategy 4 By assisting the students in their fund raising activities;
Strategy 5 By soliciting faculty and alumni donations to the Alumni
Assistance Fund.
Goal 2: That the Alumni Association will seek to increase
its membership
Strategy 1 By soliciting volunteer help from alumni parents who have
son(s) currently attending Bosco (legacy) resulting in service hour
fulfillment;
Strategy 2 By building a database of legacy parents;
Strategy 3 By encouraging alumni faculty members to help with various
fundraising activities;
Strategy 4 By encouraging current Bosco students to invite their alumni
fathers, brothers, families, etc. to help with alumni activities.
